In the seventh episode of The Pop Culture Lens podcast, Christopher Olson and CarrieLynn Reinhard are joined by Joe Belfeuil, of the blog Things That Should Not B, to discuss the classic science fiction film, Godzilla (1954).

The discussion compares the original Japanese film with the American adaptation/appropriation that came out in 1956, Godzilla, King of the Monsters!The conversation touches on many subjects related to intercultural exchanged and communication, from the issue of cultural appropriation to people’s ability to understand and appreciate a pop culture text from a culture different than their own. The three also discuss the reasons for the longevity and appropriation of Godzilla and other kaiju around the world, with a consideration for the role the terrorist attacks of September 11th played in American kaiju films.
