Making Sense of Virtual Worlds

This page contains the information for the research I did with the Virtual Worlds Research Group at Roskilde University in Denmark from September 2008-December 2010. The focus of my research was to apply Brenda Dervin’s Sense-Making Methodology to understand how people engaged with virtual worlds. My chief project was a qualitative experiment in which I had people engage with Second Life, City of Heroes, a Nintendo Wii game, and a movie. I measured how they made sense of their engage with each media product to determine the convergences and divergences in these experiences.

You can read an overview of this project, what was learned, and my thoughts on virtual worlds at this blog post: https://playingwithresearch.com/2016/04/05/reviewing-the-virtual-worlds-entertainment-study/

The blog posts listed here reflect the research and scholarship that emerged from this study and my time with the project.
