I know there are arguments out there for and against the idea of “video games as art”.
And technically, this isn’t the game. It’s not even a cutscene in a game. It’s a trailer.
But it is one of the most elegantly created trailer for a video game I have ever seen.
It’s cinematic in its scope, and actually rather heartbreaking.
I give you Dead Island.
Isn’t this like saying an action movie is art? I like Spiderman 3 as much as the next goat, but it is hardly art.
Well, people argue video games aren’t art, and people argue action films aren’t art. There may be specific examples that meet some type of aesthetic qualification. And, of course, since it is aesthetics, there can be some great variation in how people qualify one example as art compared to another example.
Personally, I think this trailer has some aesthetic qualities that, because they are similar to qualities in films that people would identify as artistic, qualifies this trailer to be rather artistically constructed.
